TUES12:00E: Service Parts Execution- Optimizing Both Performance And Visibility
12:00 PM - 12:45 PM
Abstract
Service parts supply chains have inherently different challenges than traditional distribution networks. A very dispersed supply chain coupled with part identification complexity in receiving/shipping, unpredictable demand profile and limited inventory visibility across the network lead to low turns, low fill rates and dissatisfied customers. If you are working in a complex service parts environment - whether for internal use, distributed depots, or customer site stocking locations - you will find insights from this session.
Takeaways
- Ways to improve operator speed and accuracy at all points in the service parts supply chain- from main DC operations to point-of-use stocking locations.
- Methods to capture and track real-time inventory movements and usage at all points in the supply network.
- Alternatives to merge information across the supply chain into a single real-time visibility platform.

TUES12:45B: Optimized Wave Picking And Sortation: Beyond Connecting The Dots
12:45 PM - 1:30 PM
Abstract
To maximize the efficiency of picking operations, workflows must be created to group orders based on DC layout and worker pick-paths. The goal is to minimize travel time and movement. In many applications, automated sortation systems can maximize picker efficiency for each order or wave. This requires integration between the warehouse management system directing the picking and the sortation system. This seminar will show that beyond “connecting the dots,” this integration can provide visibility to actual workflows, diagnostics to pinpoint problem areas, and the ability to dynamically reorder workflow to adjust for these problems in order to continuously optimize picking operations.

TUES1:30C: Casters For Electric Pallet Jacks- Turn Your Trucks Into High Performance Race Cars For Maximizing Productivity
1:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Abstract
Casters for electric pallet jacks are designed to increase truck productivity by counteracting roll movement especially during cornering, preventing truck payloads or even the driver from falling. In walkie or walk behind electric pallet jacks, casters are an alternative to simple skid plates that normally damage the floor and retard the truck movement. Proper adjustment in walkies will also minimize turn torque. In rider units, the caster helps increase truck stability, allowing the operator to maneuver the truck with higher speed and confidence. This helps increase truck productivity and safety levels. However, during the usage of the truck, the casters need proper adjustment. This is due to many factors including drive tire wear and the creeping effect of caster springs. Without proper adjustment, not only the caster performance, but also the truck performance will significantly drop. Potential performance deterioration includes truck stability, braking distance, tire wear performance, battery drainage, tire grip, and more. Different caster designs have different adjustment methods and difficulty levels.

WED1:30C: How To Model Your Goods-To-Person System For Higher Picking Performance
1:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Abstract
Car enthusiasts know that vehicle performance is dependent on many variables. Engine horsepower, for example, is one important factor but means very little if that power does not get distributed efficiently to the wheels. Similarly, there are many storage and retrieval “engines” in the marketplace today, all with a wide range of potential “throughput horsepower”. But regardless of the potential power of your storage engine, the overall performance of a goods-to-person picking system may suffer from poor design. This seminar will teach you relevant and applicable modeling techniques for your goods-to-person system.
Takeaways
- Understanding all key data metrics is critical to an efficient and effective design
- Though important, pure throughput of the storage engine is not the critical factor
- Goods-to-person should be an element of your overall picking solution, but not the only element

WED1:30A: Port and Maritime Logistics Trends
1:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Abstract
The North American Seaboard has been transformed by the joint forces of globalization, regionalization and containerization. Since the mid 1990s ports show a process of traffic concentration among largest port gateways. Hinterland access, the configuration of shipping line networks and supply chain management are the most significant factors driving the process at ports. Port competition is not determined by a single factor, but by several: port infrastructure, liner service (frequency of services), the availability of distribution centers and the market size that can be reached within 24 hours. Participants in this session will learn trends in ports, the forecasted growth in ports and have the question answered if the forecasted growth can be handled through American ports. In addition we will review the demand for further investments in ports and discuss the effect of the Panama Canal expansion on world trade routes.

WED1:30I: My E-Commerce Fulfillment Process Is Broken- Why?
1:30 PM - 2:15 PM
Abstract
We’ll compare and contrast traditional order processes with a lean pull based process. We’ll discuss the inefficiencies of applying traditional methodologies and processes to fulfilling direct-to-consumer orders and how capital has been used to support large work in-progress buffers. While applying lean processes typically found in manufacturing assembly lines is not common in the distribution of product, it’s the right choice for fulfilling e-Commerce orders. Systemically pulling product that is assembled to orders yields higher productivities and can simultaneous flex to volume and increase efficiency all while keeping the work in-progress buffers to a minimum. Similar to the automotive industry ergonomic, accurate, and friendly workcells are used to complete the work.
