Unit Level and Product Traceability using Data Matrix Codes - Benefits, Applications and Trends

The presentation will illustrate the benefits of providing unique identity to individual components in a manufacturing process. The advantages relative to other symbologies and form of the data matrix code will be described along with practical methods of direct part marking.
The session will describe how to choose the size and shape of a data matrix based on the required information content and the form of the object to be marked. Application examples from several industries will be provided to illustrate the use and benefits of direct part marking. The balance of the session will be concerned with the practicalities of specifying systems for reading and verifying direct part marks. In terms of specification the focus will on guidelines for choosing hand held and fixed imagers to provide reliable reading and on the application of new standards for mark verification and practical methods for controlling the marking process.
